Chapter 13

The next day, Cay and I didn’t catch sight of Harlow or our neighbours. Cay had a big day back at school as I ran errands, trying to think of all the different ways we could try and shake the shadows. By the time Cay got home, we were summoned to Mum’s for dinner.

“Oh, here you are, I was beginning to think that the two of you weren’t going to show up,” said Mum as Cay and I waltzed through the front door. We sat straight down at the dinner table that she had already dressed with her best cutlery.

“Sorry,” I said, exhausted, “it’s been a big day.”

“Is everything okay?” she asked. “Can I get the two of you some wine?”

Cay and I shook our heads in unison. “I mean, yes, everything is fine, but no wine tonight. Is this dinner for something more special that I should have been aware of?” I asked, looking down at the baggy t-shirt I walked in with because I couldn’t be bothered putting on a bra.

“No, it’s nothing special. Can’t I just be excited to have the two of you over for dinner?” said Mum, puttering around in the kitchen. The smell of paprika filled the air and I finally looked up to see what she was making. Mum was stirring a pot of curry over the stove, her hair draped over her shoulder, and the low back on her black top exposed her skin and her protruding back bone. She spun around, pouring the pot into three bowls on the bench in front of her. Her lips had thinned, her breasts were smaller, and the bones of her chest were visible through her skin.

“Mum, are you okay?”

“Yes, darling, why? How was your day?” she said as she placed bowls of steaming hot red chicken curry in front of Cay and I before grabbing her own and taking a seat in between us. She dipped her spoon into the curry, blowing on it before taking in two large mouthfuls. At least I knew that she was still eating.

“Mum,” I said, staring at her wide-eyed, “you look worse than yesterday. Did you see the doctor?”

Mum ignored my comment, continuing to eat until she finally stopped and sighed. She sat up straighter and reached her hand out to me. I rested mine on top of hers on the table.

“Yes, I’ve seen the doctor. He decided that it was best that I had a couple of days off work, as he believes that I have the virus,” she said slowly, looking at me and then Cay. I took in a deep breath, holding it as I bit my lip. My hands tensed. And I quickly exhaled, trying to relax for her, but she had already felt my reaction.

“Now there’s nothing that we need to worry about…” Mum continued.

“Are you sure about that? I mean, can you please explain this virus to me because it seems to be spreading like wildfire, and I only just found out about it yesterday,” I said.
